Man convicted for offensive behavior ahead of Burnley vs. Manchester United match
In a shocking incident prior to Burnley Football Club’s fixture with Manchester United on September 23, 27-year-old Billy Rambadt engaged in tragedy chanting, leading to his conviction and a five-year Football Banning Order (FBO). The incident occurred at 5:32 pm outside a pub in Yorkshire Street, Burnley, as a group of Manchester United fans walked past Rambadt.
Rambadt’s offensive actions involved shouting ‘Munich’ and making an aeroplane gesture, referencing the tragic 1958 Munich Air Disaster. The incident was captured on a Body Worn Video worn by one of the police officers present, and Rambadt was subsequently identified and charged with using threatening and abusive words or behavior likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress.
On Friday, February 16, Rambadt faced the consequences of his actions in Blackburn Magistrates Court, where he was convicted of the offense. In addition to receiving a five-year Football Banning Order, he was fined £500 and directed to pay £85 in costs along with a victim surcharge of £200.
Supt Melita Worswick, from the Special Operations Team, expressed strong condemnation for Rambadt’s conduct, describing it as “absolutely appalling” and something that many people would find abhorrent. She emphasized that justice had caught up with him despite not being arrested at the scene.
Worswick issued a stern warning to others contemplating similar behavior, stating, “To be clear, if you are not arrested at the time you commit an offense like this, be sure that we will be reviewing the evidence against you, and you should expect a knock at the door.”
The incident underscores the commitment of law enforcement to address offensive and inappropriate behavior in football environments. The Football Banning Order serves as a measure to prevent individuals like Rambadt from attending football matches, ensuring a safer and more respectful atmosphere for fans of all teams.
Football clubs and authorities continue to work towards creating an inclusive and enjoyable environment for all supporters. Incidents such as these are stark reminders that offensive behavior will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face serious consequences. The conviction of Billy Rambadt serves as a precedent, reinforcing the importance of respectful conduct within the football community.
