Lancashire Foster Carer Transforms Young Girl’s Life

A compassionate Lancashire woman has changed the life of a young girl through fostering, demonstrating the profound impact of love, support, and stability.

Sheena, 57, who has faced significant personal loss, including the death of her father at age 10 and the passing of her husband after a serious road traffic collision, has used her experiences to bring hope to vulnerable children. Her husband passed away when their daughter was 12 and their son was 10. Despite these challenges, Sheena has dedicated herself to giving another child the chance for a brighter future.

“We have come through some tough times as a family, and this is why I wanted to foster — to give hope, love, and happiness to another child,” Sheena explained.

In just one year of fostering with Lancashire County Council, Sheena has made a remarkable difference in the life of 8-year-old Emily (not her real name). Emily, who had previously lived in multiple homes, has now settled in school, improving from being unable to read or write to enjoying reading books and practising her spellings.

“What Emily really needed was stability and a family to be there for her,” said Sheena. “Her behaviour has improved, and she now enjoys being part of a family, even playing football with my son.”

Sheena’s daughter, a teacher, provides extra tutoring for Emily, while Sheena’s partner offers support, ensuring that Sheena has time for herself. This strong support network has allowed Emily to thrive.

Lancashire County Council is currently supporting Foster Care Fortnight, the UK’s largest foster care awareness campaign, led by The Fostering Network. This year’s theme, “The Power of Relationships,” highlights the importance of bonds between those who work together to provide love, warmth, and stability to children in need.
