Mini Police Programme Teaches Vital Road Safety Skills to Nottinghamshire Schoolchildren

Nottinghamshire Police’s innovative Mini Police programme is making a significant impact on local communities by educating over 1,000 Year 5 pupils on essential road safety and community values.

Led by dedicated officers, the nine-week programme recently reached Brierley Forest Primary and Nursery School in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Here, enthusiastic pupils eagerly participated in interactive sessions covering pedestrian safety, seatbelt use, and the dangers of distracted driving, including mobile phone use.

Throughout the programme, children also engaged in practical exercises such as measuring for car booster seats, navigating obstacle courses with ‘beer goggles’ to simulate impaired vision, and testing reflexes through coordination challenges.

Reflecting on their experiences, pupils like Endӱs expressed a sense of security knowing that police officers are nearby to help in times of need. Fellow student Amelia shared her enthusiasm for learning new safety rules, while Oliver highlighted the reassurance of police presence in the community.

Kiera Lowe, a Year 5 teacher at Brierley Forest, emphasized the programme’s role in fostering positive community engagement and building confidence among children. “It’s crucial for our pupils to understand the role of police in our community and feel empowered with the knowledge to stay safe,” she remarked.

Barbara Strang, Citizens in Policing Coordinator and Mini Police lead, underscored the programme’s dual benefit of promoting positive police interactions and equipping children with life skills that deter antisocial behavior.

Chief Inspector Clive Collings praised the programme’s impact, noting its effectiveness in bridging gaps between police and diverse community groups. “Mini Police is not just about safety education; it’s about nurturing trust and understanding from a young age,” he commented.

As Nottinghamshire Police continues to expand the Mini Police initiative, the future looks brighter with more young minds equipped to make informed decisions and contribute positively to their communities.
