Motorists encouraged to lock up their vehicles at night after more than 30 incidents

Thieves are striking at night and stealing valuables from cars in Forest Fields, Radford, Lenton and the Hyson Green area.

Officers are encouraging motorists to remain vigilant after a majority of the thefts have taken place due to unlocked doors and windows.

Since the beginning of November, there has been 36 reports of valuables stolen from vehicles in the City Central area.

This has included everything from loose change to wallets and purses left in the vehicles. On some occasions, bank cards have been stolen and used.

Officers are carrying out a number of lines of inquiry including CCTV to catch those responsible. There will also be extra patrols in the hotspot areas.

Neighbourhood Inspector Liz Gaskin said:

“We believe this is a group of opportunist thieves who are walking around these areas, usually at night, trying as many doors and windows they can until they find one that is unsecure.

“We have gone from very few reports of this crime to up to six a night. It is a priority for us to ensure we find these offenders and bring them to justice.

“I would really like to encourage motorists to be vigilant. Make sure your car is secured when you leave it parked at night.

“Make sure your car is locked, windows closed, and that all valuables are removed.

“Some of these incidents have resulted in glass being broken so that thieves can get hold of items within. However, the majority of targeted vehicles have not been locked.”

If you see anyone acting suspicious around vehicles in these areas we would urge you to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101.
